“The Snowy Day” Mixed Media Collages: Kindergarten

Together, we read the book “The Snowy Day” before starting our collages. Students learned collages techniques to create their designs before finishing their projects with tempera paint and sharpies.


Rainy Day Color Wheels: Kindergarten

Kindergarten students learned basic color theory by studying the color wheel. We learned about the primary colors and mixed our own secondary colors using tempera paints. 


The Very Lazy Ladybug Paintings: 1st Grade

For this water color project we read the story “The Very Lazy Ladybug” by Isobel Finn & Jack Tickle. Next, students drew their own lazy ladybugs, traced their drawings with a sharpie, and finally painted their projects.


Alexander Calder Inspired Abstract Primary Paintings: 1st Grade

Students learned about the artist Alexander Calder, created stencils and painted their own abstract pieces using the primary colors.


Van Gogh’s Starry Night: 1st Grade

Students studied the life of Vincent Van Gogh before creating their own paintings inspired by his works.


Van Gogh Sunflowers: Kindergarten & 1st

Students studied the life of Vincent Van Gogh before creating their own sunflower paintings inspired by his works.


Mixed Media Flower Fields: Kindergarten

During this project, students learned why perennial flowers grow back every spring. We created our own flower fields with tempera paint sticks, collaged paper and liquid tempera paints. 


Spring Trees: Kindergarten

Students learned collage techniques to create their own spring trees.


Oil Pastel Cityscapes: Kindergarten & 1st

During this oil pastel unit, students learned how to draw buildings and blend oil pastels. 


Colorful Chameleon Paintings: based on the book “A Color of His Own” by Leo Lionni (1st grade)

To begin this watercolor painting unit, we read the book “A Color of His Own” by Leo Lionni. We then sketched and sharpie outlined our own chameleons inspired by the story. Finally, we painted our drawings with watercolor paints.


Dot Day! Kindergarten & 1st

This painting lesson centered around “The Dot” by Peter H. Reynolds. Through the stories protagonist Vashti, students learned about the importance of experimentation in art-making. After the book reading, we sketched our own dots and colored them in with tempera paint sticks.


Kandinsky’s Concentric Circles: 2nd 

In this watercolor unit, 2nd and 3rd grade students studied the abstract paintings of Kandinsky. We learned about his career as an abstract painter and how he used music to inspire his paintings.
